The Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. George J. Deacon, accompanied by the Deputy and Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, with an escort of Provincial Grand Officers, attended the Sestercentenary of the Phoenix Lodge of Mark Masters No 2, in association with Chapter of Friendship No 257, at the Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday 28 September 2019.
This was a wonderful celebration of Mark Masonry with the 250th anniversary of the first recorded working of the Mark Ritual. The Most Worshipful Brother Raymond J. Smith, The M.W. Pro Grand Master, attended along with Most Excellent Companion Russell Race, Second Grand Principal.
At the beginning of the meeting there were processions by the Worshipful Master and Officers of Phoenix Lodge of Mark Masters and Most Excellent Zerubbabel and Officers of Chapter of Friendship. This was followed by the Mark Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. George J. Deacon and Officers of the Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight together with the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Philip Alan Berman and Officers of the Provincial Grand Chapter of Hampshire and Isle of Wight. The final procession was the Most Worshipful Pro Grand Master, Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons and The Most Excellent Second Grand Principal, Supreme Grand Chapter accompanied by official guests.
Following the welcoming address by the Worshipful Master of Phoenix Lodge, W.Bro. Derek E. Reed, there was a Lecture by Professor Aubrey Newman, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Leicester. A enactment was then staged of an early Mark Ceremony given by the Sussex Mark Re-enactment Team (SMART) from Sussex. There then followed a further lecture by Professor Aubrey Newman. Finally The Most Worshipful Brother Raymond J. Smith, The Most Worshipful Pro Grand Master spoke on behalf of The Grand Lodge of Mark Masons.
Following the meeting there was a fine luncheon enjoyed by all. An excellent day which will be remembered for a very long time.
